Getting to know the Triple Helix Model is the Key to Accelerating Innovation and the Economy in Indonesia

In the era of globalization that demands fast-paced change, innovation can no longer occur in isolated partitions. Universities cannot only focus on theory, industry cannot only think about short-term profits, and the government cannot only produce rigid regulations. This is where the Triple Helix model emerges as a golden bridge to the national innovation ecosystem.

What is the Triple Helix Model?

The Triple Helix model is a concept in the sociology of innovation initiated by Henry Etzkowitz and Loet Leydesdorff. This concept emphasizes that the key to progress in a knowledge-based economy (knowledge-based economy) lies in the reciprocal relationship between three main actors:

1. Academics (Academia): Act as creators of knowledge, providers of research results, and producers of superior human resources (HR).
2. Business (Business/Industry): Acts as a market driver, capital provider, and party that commercializes research results into products with selling value.
3. Government (Government): Acts as a regulator, provider of policy incentives, and facilitator of conducive infrastructure.

Why does Indonesia Need Triple Helix Synergy?

Based on global innovation index data, Indonesia continues to strive to improve its competitiveness ranking. One of the biggest challenges in the country is the phenomenon where many academic research results end up in library drawers without ever reaching the industrial market.

Through the solid Triple Helix collaboration, this obstacle can be overcome. This collaboration encourages downstream research, reduces industrial research costs through the use of campus laboratories, and ensures that government policies are right on target to support the growth of MSMEs and corporations.

Implementation Challenges in the Field

Even though the theory sounds ideal, the implementation of the Triple Helix in Indonesia still faces sectoral egos. A professional mediator or catalyst is needed who is able to translate academic language, business language and bureaucratic language into one harmonious vision.
